How does the return-to-base leak test service work?
HTSL supplies a leak test kit with instructions for taking the required wipe samples. Once completed, return the samples to our laboratory for analysis. We’ll then provide documented results for your radiation protection records.
Can HTSL carry out the leak test at my premises?
Yes. Subject to the source type, location and scope of work, an HTSL engineer can attend your site and carry out the leak testing on your behalf. Contact our team with details of your sources and we can advise on the most appropriate option.
How often should sealed radioactive sources be leak tested?
The appropriate frequency depends on the source, its use, your regulatory requirements and the advice of your Radiation Protection Adviser. Your RPA can advise on the testing regime appropriate to your organisation.
What information do you need before arranging a leak test?
Typically, we’ll need details such as the radionuclide, activity, source type or identification, equipment in which it is installed and its location. For engineer attendance, we may require additional information to assess the scope and plan the work safely.
What happens if a leak test indicates contamination?
If results indicate potential leakage or removable contamination, the source should not simply continue in normal use. Appropriate controls should be implemented and advice sought from your RPA to determine the required actions. HTSL can provide radiation protection support where required.
