What is UKAS accreditation and why does it matter for calibration?

How often should radiation monitoring instruments be calibrated?
Under Regulation 20 of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) and its associated Approved Code of Practice (ACoP), radiation protection and monitoring instruments must be adequately tested and calibrated at least once every 12 months.

Additionally, instruments must undergo performance testing before being used for the first time, or following any significant repair, physical damage, or suspected malfunction.
What documentation will I receive with my calibrated instrument?
Upon successful completion of the calibration process, you will receive:
UKAS Calibration Certificate: An official certificate detailing the measurement results, expanded uncertainties, environmental conditions during testing, and direct traceability back to national standards.
Calibration Sticker/Label: Affixed directly to your instrument displaying the test date, certificate number, and recommended next calibration due date.
Examination Report: Detailed breakdown of pre-calibration checks, initial response tests, and pass/fail criteria verified by a Qualified Person.
What happens if my instrument fails calibration?
If your instrument fails to meet required tolerance levels, sensitivity, or linearity standards during testing:
Detailed Reporting: You will receive a non-conformance report outlining the specific parameters or measurements that failed.
Adjustment or Repair Quote: We will contact you with an assessment of whether the unit can be adjusted, repaired, or needs component replacement.
Recalibration: Once repaired, the instrument will undergo a complete calibration sequence to issue a valid certificate.
Decommissioning Advice: If the instrument is beyond economic repair (BER), we will advise on suitable replacement options to maintain your site safety standards.
How do I book a UKAS calibration?
Booking a UKAS calibration with us is straightforward:

- After your instruments have been received, you’ll be receive confirmation of arrival.
- Customers can request access to our portal to track the calibration process of their instrument.
- After a successful calibration, instruments and certificate are returned to you.
